Crown Arrow Cut Explained: Hearts and Arrows in Moissanite and Lab-Grown Diamond

Crown Arrow Cut™ is a gemstone name built from two parts of a cut stone. The crown is the upper half of a moissanite or lab-grown diamond, the part that faces up out of the ring, and the arrows are the eight points a hearts and arrows round shows face-up in a reflector viewer.

Crown Arrow is our own name, not a trade term, but read as anatomy it already tells you where to look. It is our own design, built on the hearts and arrows pattern and cut as Crown Arrow from the start in moissanite and lab-grown diamond.

If you met the name on a listing and wondered whether it is just a label on a familiar round, that is a fair question. It is not a new outline. A Crown Arrow round looks like a round brilliant, and a Crown Arrow pear looks like a pear. What differs is how the stone is cut, and that is tuned to what the stone is made of.

What hearts and arrows actually means

Hearts and arrows, or H&A, is a pattern you see in full only through a small reflector viewer called a scope. Face-up, a precisely cut round shows eight even arrows. Face-down, its pavilion shows eight hearts.

The pattern appears only when matching facets line up to within fractions of a degree. A true one shows all eight hearts and all eight arrows, regular and equally bright, and a half-degree tilt in the viewer is enough to skew it.

H&A is a pattern name, not a grade. It is not part of the cut grade on a GIA report and has no codified industry standard, so on a listing it means whatever bar the seller has set.

We did not invent it. It is an established industry pattern, and DovEggs has worked with it for years. Crown Arrow is our own design, built on that pattern.

What makes a stone Crown Arrow

Crown Arrow Cut is our own design, built on the hearts and arrows pattern. Every Crown Arrow moissanite and lab-grown diamond is cut as Crown Arrow from the start, not sorted out of finished H&A stones afterward.

One design, tuned to each material. Moissanite and diamond handle light differently, so the design is not cut to identical proportions in both.

Crown Arrow Cut is a proprietary, patent-protected design. A Crown Arrow round has 58 facets, the same count as a classic round brilliant, so the difference was never going to be in how many facets there are. It is in how precisely they line up.

In moissanite, we tune the pavilion

Crown Arrow moissanite is cut as Crown Arrow from the start. Next to our lab-grown diamond version, a round keeps the same crown height and has a slightly shallower pavilion. That is a deliberate choice, not a limit of the material: moissanite can be cut to the same depth, and we tune it this way to suit how moissanite handles light.

Moissanite is silicon carbide, its own gemstone and not a diamond, with a dispersion of 0.104 against a diamond's 0.044. The cut does not add that fire. It organizes how the fire leaves the stone.

The shapes are round, pear and cushion. Crown Arrow Cut moissanite loose stones run from 1 to 5 carats, and our ring designs set with Crown Arrow stones show how each shape sits on a hand. If you find you want less fire, not more, the cut we designed to go the other way sits at the far end of our range.

In lab-grown diamond, we plan from the crystal

Our lab-grown diamonds are Crown Arrow from the crystal up, because DovEggs grows them and cuts them in-house. We plan each Crown Arrow diamond from the start, with a redesigned crown and arrow facets re-aligned to catch more light from above and send it back up through the top.

A grown crystal sets limits of its own. As-grown CVD crystals, one common type, come out flat and tabular, and that shape limits which faceting styles they can yield. With a grown diamond, the finished geometry is something you plan early, not something you sort for later.

A lab-grown diamond is a real diamond, the same crystallized carbon as a mined one, grown in a lab instead of found in the ground. Our Crown Arrow lab-grown diamonds are round only, and each one comes with an NGIC report. Current stock is sold out, so that page shows the stones we have made rather than what is available today, but a Crown Arrow lab-grown diamond can still be made to order. Mention Crown Arrow Cut in your request through our custom lab-grown diamond page, and a dedicated team will follow up with you. If you are deciding between the two materials, our side-by-side of Crown Arrow moissanite and lab-grown diamond is the place for that.

How to check a Crown Arrow stone yourself

Ask for face-up video in ordinary daylight before you trust a photo. Much of what a well-cut round does happens in motion.

If the pattern is why you are buying, ask for scope images too. You want eight arrows face-up and eight hearts face-down, all present, even in size and brightness.

Then ask any seller how a stone gets its H&A label: cut to the pattern from the start, or sorted into it afterward. Ours is cut as Crown Arrow from the start.

With moissanite, judge crispness straight through the table. Moissanite is doubly refractive and is usually cut so the doubling hides when you look down through the top, while angled side facets can show doubled edges. That is the material, not a cutting flaw.

With the lab-grown diamond version, read the NGIC report first, then trust your eyes on the video.

Frequently asked questions

Is a Crown Arrow moissanite a diamond?

No. Moissanite is silicon carbide, its own gemstone, and a Crown Arrow cut does not change that. It rates 9.25 on the Mohs scale, hard enough for daily wear, and shows more fire than diamond. The Crown Arrow lab-grown diamond is a diamond, grown in a lab rather than mined.

Is Crown Arrow Cut the same as hearts and arrows?

Not quite. H&A is the pattern, and Crown Arrow is our own design built on it. Crown Arrow moissanite and lab-grown diamond are cut to that design from the start, so not every H&A stone is a Crown Arrow.

What Crown Arrow Cut is not

It is not a new shape. From across a room, a Crown Arrow round reads as a round brilliant; the difference shows up close, in how evenly it flashes.

It is not one set of proportions. Moissanite and lab-grown diamond share the design but are cut to suit each material.

It is not a different material. Moissanite in this cut is still silicon carbide, and a lab-grown diamond still carbon.

It is not a reason to stop looking. A name tells you which design a stone was cut to; a video tells you whether you love it.

Crown Arrow Cut is our own design built on hearts and arrows, cut as Crown Arrow from the start in moissanite and lab-grown diamond, and tuned to each material.
