What Is a Moissanite Ring? A Simple Guide
A moissanite ring is a ring set with moissanite, a lab-grown gemstone that looks a lot like diamond and is known for its brightness and rainbow-like sparkle. It is a popular choice for engagement rings and everyday jewelry because it is durable, affordable, and available in many shapes and colors. DovEggs has been making moissanite jewelry since 2014, and every piece on our website is made to order.
What moissanite actually is
Moissanite is a crystalline material that is grown in a lab. It is not a diamond, and it is not a simulant like cubic zirconia — it is its own gemstone with its own properties. On the Mohs hardness scale it sits just below diamond, which makes it a good everyday stone for a ring. It also has a higher refractive index than diamond, so it throws more colorful fire, especially in larger sizes.
Because it is lab-grown, moissanite does not carry the mining and price history of natural diamond. That is a big part of why it costs less. If you want a diamond itself (with diamond certificates and the classic diamond look), a lab grown diamond is the better choice for you. If you love sparkle, want a large stone, and prefer to spend less, moissanite is usually the better choice.
How it looks and wears
In person, a well-cut moissanite looks bright and lively. In colorless grades it reads white and clear; in colored grades it can be grey, blue, champagne, or black. It resists scratching well and holds up to daily wear. Like any stone, it can be damaged by a hard knock, and it can collect soap and lotion over time, so a gentle clean with mild soap and a soft brush keeps it looking its best.
One honest note: moissanite has more fire than diamond, and some people notice a slightly warmer or more colorful flash in certain lighting. If you want a very subtle, diamond-like look, a lab diamond may suit you better. If you want maximum sparkle, moissanite is the stronger choice.
Colors and cuts
DovEggs moissanite comes in two groups. The first is regular colors, which are made to order like any other stone: colorless DEF and GHI, plus the colors in our colored moissanite collection — Twilight Blue, Stardust Grey, Peacock Blue, Champagne, and Black. Our color labels are conservative, and we hand-pick every stone, so the DEF tier is actually D color and the GHI tier is actually E–F color.
The second group is Accident Colors, which exist only in the Exclusive Color collection. These are limited one-off stones such as Lemon Drop yellow, Fancy Yellow, Aurora Teal, Midnight Evergreen, Deep Forest Teal, Hawaii Blue, and Olive Green. Each one exists only in the shape, cut, and carat size listed, and it cannot be reproduced. Sapphire, ruby, and emerald are separate colored gemstones, not moissanite.
For cuts, we offer the classic shapes plus signature and specialty cuts such as Hearts & Arrows, Nova, Astro, Empress, Unity, Criss, Sakura, rose cut, crushed-ice styles, and antique cuts OMC (Old Mine Cut) and OEC (Old European Cut). Antique cuts are available in moissanite and in colored gemstones above 1 carat. Stone size is defined by our stone size chart rather than carat alone, so we confirm the millimeter dimensions with you.
Metals DovEggs uses
We work in sterling silver, solid 10k, 14k, and 18k gold, and solid platinum. Sterling silver is a main metal for us, equal to gold and platinum, and it comes with double-layer platinum plating by default. That plating slows tarnishing a lot, but silver underneath can still darken over time with moisture, air, chemicals, and especially pool chlorine. Normal tarnish usually polishes off with mild soap and a soft brush or a silver cloth, and we can re-dip the piece.
If you want a metal that does not need plating, solid gold or platinum is the better choice. If you want the lowest price and love the look, platinum-plated silver is a strong option. You can also request another plating or tell us about a metal allergy in advance.
How a made-to-order moissanite ring is made at DovEggs
Everything on our website is made to order, so there is no ready-to-ship stock. The flow is simple: you get a quote, you pay, and we send a CAD drawing within 72 hours. You can request changes such as band thickness or width, setting height, pavé placement, and stone matching, and we send a revised CAD for a second approval. Production starts only after you approve.
Production takes about 7–10 business days for gold and platinum and about 15 business days for silver, longer around holidays. Before shipping we send enlarged, unretouched photos of the finished piece for your approval, and a video if you ask for one. US orders ship by DHL or FedEx for a flat $19 and arrive 5–7 business days after production. International orders ship by DHL in about 4–6 business days, free over $500, with import duties paid by the customer.

FAQ
Is moissanite a real gemstone?
Yes. Moissanite is its own gemstone, grown in a lab. It is not diamond and not cubic zirconia.
Does moissanite look fake?
No. A well-cut moissanite looks bright and lively. It has more colorful fire than diamond, which some people love and others find too flashy.
Can I get a moissanite ring in any shape or color?
Yes, everything at DovEggs is made to order, so you can choose almost any shape, color, and metal. Accident Colors are the exception — those are limited one-off stones, so only the exact pieces listed can be sold.
Will sterling silver tarnish?
Eventually, yes. Our silver comes double-layer platinum plated, which slows it a lot, but the silver underneath can still darken with moisture, air, chemicals, and pool chlorine. Normal tarnish usually polishes off, and we can re-dip the piece.
How long does a made-to-order moissanite ring take?
After you approve the CAD, production takes about 7–10 business days for gold and platinum and about 15 business days for silver, longer around holidays. US delivery is 5–7 business days after production.
Is moissanite covered by a warranty?
Yes. Our limited lifetime warranty covers the stone's optical properties and physical integrity, plus jewelry workmanship defects. It does not cover accidents, abuse, loss, or normal wear and tear.
