Both lab grown diamonds and moissanite are beautiful, durable stones that work well in an engagement ring or everyday fine jewelry. A lab grown diamond is a real diamond, chemically identical to a mined one, while moissanite is a different gemstone with even more rainbow fire and a much lower price. The right choice comes down to what you value most: diamond identity and certification, or maximum sparkle for your budget.

What each stone actually is

A lab grown diamond is a diamond. It is created in a laboratory instead of being mined, but it has the same crystal structure, hardness and optical properties as a natural diamond. It is a real diamond, just grown above ground.

Moissanite is a completely different gemstone, made of silicon carbide. It occurs naturally only in tiny amounts, so almost all jewelry moissanite is created in a lab. It is not a diamond simulant in the sense of glass or cubic zirconia; it is its own gem with its own look.

Hardness and everyday wear

Diamond is the hardest natural material, so a lab grown diamond is extremely resistant to scratching and holds up to daily wear for decades. Moissanite is also very hard and well suited to everyday rings, though it is slightly softer than diamond. In practice, both stones are durable enough for a ring you never take off, and both are covered by DovEggs' limited lifetime stone warranty for optical properties and physical integrity.

Brilliance and fire

This is where the two stones feel different. A well-cut diamond returns bright white light and has a balanced mix of brilliance and fire. Moissanite has more fire, meaning more of those rainbow flashes, especially in sunlight and warm indoor lighting. Some people love that extra color; others prefer the calmer, more classic look of a diamond. Neither is better, they are simply different personalities.

Color grades and fancy colors

Lab grown diamonds are graded on the standard diamond color scale, and DovEggs uses DEF color lab diamond stones as standard for its bands. Fancy colored lab diamonds exist but are more limited, and many fancy-colored or custom-cut lab diamonds cannot be IGI certified.

Moissanite color labels at DovEggs are conservative: the DEF tier is actually D color and the GHI tier is actually E–F color, because every stone is hand-picked. Moissanite also comes in regular colors such as Twilight Blue, Stardust Grey, Peacock Blue, Champagne and Black, all made to order, plus limited one-off Accident Colors in the Exclusive Color collection. If you want a colored stone, moissanite usually gives you more options at a friendlier price.

Certificates

Lab diamonds come with proper grading reports. DovEggs' Group lab diamonds from partner labs mostly come with IGI certificates, and IGI-certified stones have the report number laser-inscribed on the girdle, which you can verify online. DovEggs-grown stones are mostly certified by NGIC. Moissanite is certified too, but no certificate is shipped with the order; the stone's quality is backed by the lifetime warranty instead.

Price logic (no numbers, just how it works)

Lab grown diamonds cost more than moissanite because producing and grading a diamond is a more involved process. Within lab diamonds, Group stones from partner labs are usually lower priced than Boutique stones grown and hand-selected by DovEggs, and carat, color and clarity grades all raise the price. Moissanite gives you a larger, more elaborate-looking ring for the same budget, which is why it is so popular for statement designs.

How to choose

Choose a lab grown diamond if having a real diamond matters to you, if you want a formal grading report, or if you prefer a more restrained, classic sparkle. Choose moissanite if you want the biggest, most dazzling stone your budget allows, if you love rainbow fire, or if you want a colored stone such as blue, grey or champagne. Many couples pick moissanite for the engagement ring and lab diamond accents, or the other way around.

How DovEggs can help

FAQ

Is moissanite a fake diamond?

No. Moissanite is its own gemstone, not a fake or a copy. It looks different from a diamond on purpose, with more rainbow fire, and it is a legitimate choice for fine jewelry.

Which one is better for an engagement ring?

Both work beautifully. A lab grown diamond suits people who want a real diamond with a grading report; moissanite suits people who want the largest, most sparkly stone for their budget. It is a preference, not a quality ranking.

Does moissanite lose its sparkle over time?

No, moissanite does not fade or cloud on its own. Keeping it clean with mild soap and a soft brush restores its sparkle, and DovEggs' limited lifetime warranty covers the stone's optical properties and physical integrity.

Do lab grown diamonds come with certificates?

Yes. DovEggs' Group lab diamonds from partner labs mostly come with IGI certificates, and DovEggs-grown stones are mostly certified by NGIC. Custom-cut and many fancy-colored lab diamonds cannot be IGI certified, and DovEggs will tell you honestly before you order.

Can I put a lab diamond in a moissanite ring design?

Yes. DovEggs designs can be made with a lab diamond center stone instead of moissanite, either as a current design or as a custom piece. You can also order the stone and setting separately.

Can I see the actual stone before it ships?

If a specific stone is not in hand, DovEggs cannot send a video before you order, but the real video is sent after it arrives and you may cancel for a full refund. Finished pieces are photographed for your approval before shipping.
