Coated moissanite starts with a finished stone and receives its color afterward. A thin film or ion-induction layer creates the hue on the surface. That finish can still look beautiful, but it may wear, dull, scratch, or be affected by high heat and certain cleaning methods over time. A through-color stone and a coated stone may look almost identical in product photos, but they can perform very differently with long-term wear.

This distinction is documented beyond our own experience. A leading gem lab has analyzed commercial synthetic moissanite with colored surface films, including coatings that produced blue and pink hues. Some well-known sellers also describe fancy-color moissanite as a surface treatment created through heat and ion induction, with care instructions that warn against very high heat and ultrasonic cleaning.

That does not mean coated moissanite is inherently bad. It simply requires different care, and its color may not be as permanent as color grown throughout the crystal. Which moissanite colors are through-color and which are usually coated

Colored moissanite exists across a broad spectrum, but not every shade is commonly produced in the same way. Some colors are much easier to find as through-color moissanite than others.

Blue, grey, champagne, yellow, teal, and green can all be produced as grown-in colors. Pink and other vivid fashion shades such as red and purple are more often created with surface treatments. Black is different again, with an opaque appearance rather than a transparent colored-stone look.

The key distinction is whether the color is grown into the stone or added as a surface coating. Is colored moissanite durable enough for an everyday ring

Yes. Moissanite itself is highly durable, ranking at 9.25 on the Mohs hardness scale. That hardness comes from the silicon carbide crystal, so it applies whether the stone is colorless or colored.

Color durability is a separate issue. The hardness of the stone does not prevent a surface coating from wearing over time. With through-color moissanite, however, the color is part of the crystal rather than a layer applied to the surface. That makes through-color a better fit for jewelry you plan to wear regularly when long-term color stability matters.

Colored moissanite also appears especially bright because moissanite has a higher refractive index than diamond and roughly twice the dispersion, the property responsible for rainbow fire. That combination gives the stone its lively appearance and noticeable flashes of color.

Lemon Drop yellow, Aurora Teal, Midnight Evergreen, and Cyan Green all come from this series rather than a standing color line. These stones appear in different cuts and sizes depending on the individual batch, and they may be available as loose stones or center stones.

If uniqueness matters more to you than finding one exact shade name, the Accident Color Series is worth watching. Availability is genuinely limited because these colors were not produced as repeatable standard colors.
